The Mexican Monetary System

There are 100 Mexican cents (centavos) to one Mexican Peso. Coins have the values of 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c, $1 $2, $5, and $10. There is a $20 coin in circulation but these are very rare.

Notes have the values of $20 $50 $100, $200 $500 and $1000. It is more common to see note denominations up to $200 pesos.

Bringing into Mexico

If you are travelling from within USA, you can bring in and take out bank notes, travellers’ cheques in USD up to the value of $10,000 USD. US Dollars are accepted in most high street shops and stores.

Travelling from other countries it is advisable to purchase a small amount of Mexican pesos before arriving in Mexico and use a debit or credit card facility in Mexico to withdraw money from the available ATM´s and Cash Machines in the local Mexican Currency.

If you are travelling to Mexico, you will need to declare any sums of cash of $10,000 USD or more (or the equivalent in another currency) to Mexican Customs & Immigration.
